For the Identity Project, we had to pick a question that surrounded the greater theme of identity. I chose to focus on cyber identity and my question was "How does one's identity online differ from their real world identity?". I chose this topic of cyber identity because many people act very different online than they would in person. This can range from a teen saying vulgar things over the Internet to, something a little more serious, a criminal phishing for personal information. Additionally, with the ever evolving technological world we live in, cyber identity is very important now and will be even more in the future. I made the person anonymous to show that over the Internet another person can act very different than what they really are like. Additionally, I added puzzle pieces to further add to the figure's anonymity. To add a sense of mystery, I added the deep purple puzzle pieces over where the person's eyes would be, similar to a mask. Along with those, I added some question marks to further symbolize mystery. Then, around the figure I drew social media icons because social media is used heavily by people my age and is a major part of a teen's cyber identity. Plus, I added an "Enter" key from a keyboard to symbolize that whatever is put out online stays out there forever. And lastly, there is the finger print and padlock as a general symbol to my theme, cyber identity. |
Overall, I am pleased with the way my final project turned out. It is a little rougher than I would have liked it to be, but I did like how it all came together. If I were to redo this project I might just rearrange the way I drew the icons around the figure to space them out more evenly along with some other small changes. But, again, I am very proud of the way this turned out now that it is finished.
1.) Tell about your work. How did you interpret the theme? What materials did you use? What inspired you?
For the Identity project, I interpreted the theme of identity with a technological spin. I chose to specifically focus on the theme of cyber identity and how people online can act very different than they would in real life. I was inspired by this cyber identity theme because when I looked around, there was a lot of different types of technology, even in an art classroom. This made me think of the profound impact technology has on our society and world, so I decided to relate this identity project. To actually make the project, I drew an outline of a person and colored him gray with a purple mask shape over his eyes to add a sense of mystery. Then, I drew puzzle pieces over the figure to further add to the sense of anonymity. Around the figure I drew different technology related logos, keyboard keys, a padlock and question marks, all which symbolize that one's cyber identity can be unknown on many different types of technology. Lastly, I put took ink and printed my fingerprint in the bottom left to symbolize the overarching and general theme of identity. So overall, my project has a couple different medias incorporated.
2.) What do you want people to notice in your work?
I want people to notice the figure's anonymity represented by the colors, puzzle pieces and blank space over the figure's eyes. Also, I want viewers to notice the different social media logos around his head which symbolize that people can be dangerously anonymous on a technology heavily used by my demographic. Plus, I want others to notice the general identity themed icons which are the fingerprint, question marks and padlock, reminding them that you must keep your cyber identity safe all the time.
3.) How successful is you artwork? Explain why.
I feel my artwork is pretty successful and I am proud of the way the final product turned out. I feel the most successful part of my project is how it conveys my theme of cyber identity with the mystery of the figure and the symbols and icons surrounding the head.
