For this project we were to brainstorm 20 words that the word new can go with (ie. "new car", "new day", etc). I chose the word "New Frontier" to base my "New" Illustration on. I think the idea of "New Frontier" was an original way of interpreting the theme of "New". I decided I wanted to make my drawing look like what the explorers Lewis and Clark would see. So, I made my drawing an open grassland with a river and mountains in the distance. This could be perceived as the Rocky Mountains from the Great Plains, or just a generic open field that has yet to be found. For this illustration, I wanted to try to draw everything just with a pencil to challenge myself. For the most part I think I met that goal. But, it was tricky getting the tall grass to look smaller as the picture went into the distance. Also, I could have done better with making the grass at the same distance, the same color. Lastly, the clouds were very difficult to draw and I couldn't get them to look how I wanted. On the other hand, I think I did a very good job with making the mountains the right color and the right distance in relation to the picture. Additionally, I think I did well in making the color and positioning of the sun. Also, I think I did a good job on drawing the river in my illustration.
For my Unit 1 Space Project I decided to do an abstract one-point perspective drawing. I saw some other drawings like this and thought they were really cool and almost mind-twisting. So, I tried my best to make it look like all of these random shapes somehow fit together, like a big geometrical puzzle, exploding out from one center point. My understanding of artistic space was changed during this unit because I used to think space in art was just the space with artwork in/on it and the blank space around it. But now I know space can be much, much more than that. It can be three dimensional drawings, perspective photos and pictures, and it can even be stop motion. Space can be so many things in art. I thought the exercise that was most helpful was the one where we were given blocks, and then we turned on the spotlights and we learned how to draw 3-D with shadows. That helped me get a basic understanding of shadows on 3-D objects which is a part of almost every single drawing. All in all, I am very proud of my final project. I think it turned out really well and does sort of mess with your mind. I think I did really well in drawing the shapes and making them all descend into one point. Also, I think I did very well with making all of my shapes fit together and making them look three dimensional. But, I think I put them a little to close together and it does look a little cramped. All in all, I am happy and proud of what I have created. This week in Art we have been working with perspective and did two really cool projects dealing with that element of art. For the first Perspective Project, we had to go around campus with our group, and take pictures of ourselves and another object. We had to take the picture in such a way that the perspective of ourselves in relation to he object was off, therefore making an illusion. This was very fun because we had to think about a picture from a very different angle than we normally would. Also, it was very cool to see our pictures fit together and actually look like they could be real. For the top picture, we tried to make it look like he was about to step on a car and crush it with his foot. This one actually turned out to be our best one because we lined the angle of the camera's perspective up the best to create a believable illusion. Then for the picture to the left, we tried to make it look like he was hanging from the electrical wire. In reality though, he was actually standing on the ground and the camera was very close to the ground pointing up. This way it made him look as if he was as tall as the wires and could just reach up and grab them. The second perspective project we did was learning how to draw in one-point perspective. This made drawing 3-D objects so much easier and made me feel like a fool for not knowing this before. I had always struggled to draw and certainly struggled trying to draw three dimensions. But since learning about one-point perspective drawing, I can draw lots of basic 3-D shapes. |
